Your requests for image deletions[kemmañ ar vammenn]

Hello,

I, and other users, are aware that many images should be deleted from this wiki, and there is an ongoing process to do so. Just look at my deletion log (and VIGNERON’s). I believe, however, that the situation is not urgent enough that we would delete files that are currently in use. Therefore, we replace images with others from Commons, or simply remove them from the articles if they are not really useful, and only then, we mark them for deletion. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 11:37 (UTC)[respont]

Hi Huñvreüs! Yes I can see that you delete files. That is great if it is not possible to have the uploader add a relevant license. Per wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy all files must have a valid license and on English Wikipedia and Commons files are deleted after 7 days if there is no valid license.
Do you have a list of files without a license or could it help you if I try to make a list? Or perhaps if I add a template like "no license" on the files so uploaders will get a notice (where you could add a notice in local language to help uploaders)?
I noticed that there are 1,397 files in Dibar:RestroùDizimplij. Are they really unused or did someone break a template somewhere? --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 14:38 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 I think the most useful way of contributing is to unlink the images from the articles, ideally replacing them with alternatives from Commons, and then tag them with {{delete}}. I process the deletion backlog every once in a while. Few to no files in this wiki have a license. The license templates and associated system don’t really work either, but I don’t think it is worth fixing it, we should just use Commons.
There are indeed many unused files, which should be deleted. If memory serves, VIGNERON offered to delete them, he probably forgot. I saw that Pywikibot allows to delete everything in a category or in a list contained in a file, but this special page provides none of these. Do you know a way to automate the deletion of all unused files? Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 14:58 (UTC)[respont]
Hi Huñvreüs! It should be easy to add all the unused files to a list. So if you or VIGNERON can use pywikibot to delete files that would be the easiest. If there are any active users that uploaded many files it is possible to add a license tag with a bot. Uploader just have to declare that they are own work and that the files are licensed cc-by-sa-4.0 for example. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 15:03 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 How you would make a list from the special page?
As for active users, at least Dakbzh (kd), who is also Kadbzh (kd), uploaded many photos he took, for example of chess players. We already discussed the topic, he wants to keep them but it is unclear how to do that properly. Can you please offer him to add license tags? Once this is done, can you transfer his images to Commons on his behalf? Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 15:10 (UTC)[respont]
Hi Huñvreüs! The unused files should be on this list: Implijer:MGA73/Orphan
A good license to add on own photos/files is "cc-by-sa-4.0" (Attribution ShareAlike 4.0). I will make a list of files and who uploaded them. Then we can see how many files they uploaded.
To fix it we either need a local bot user or a bot flag for User:MGA73bot. Or we could perhaps edit without a bot flag if it is only a few hundred files? --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 15:35 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 Thanks.
BTW, can you please add the license tag that you mentioned to any file of mine that doesn’t have it?
Doing a few edits without the bot flag is definitely possible. You can request the bot flag here (after InternetArchiveBot), doing so in English is OK. We don’t have bureaucrats, so the discussion needs to stay up for a week, and then you can ask a steward to grant the flag. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 15:50 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs! You can now see the list at Implijer:MGA73/AllFiles. There are 7 users with more than 100 uploads and 26 with more than 10 (but less than 100). If all the unused files are deleted it will reduce the numbers a lot.
I will ask for a bot flag. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 15:53 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 At a glance:
  • It is worth contacting Kadbzh, Llydawr, Yun, Gwendal, Tanjee, Fulup, Kadwalan, Arko, MP and Pymouss, after checking that they have files that can be kept;
  • I already gave consent for tagging my untagged files with CC-by-sa 4.0;
  • Bianchi-Bihan is banned;
  • Damien Perrotin is deceased;
  • The others are inactive AFAIK.
I am not sure that I will have time to process the deletion backlog as I will have limited availability during the coming two weeks. If you want, you can ask a global sysop to do the job. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 16:02 (UTC)[respont]
Hello again Huñvreüs! I will create a few templates like Template:Information and Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0 that is needed if we are going to transfer the files to Commons. Then I will do a few edits and request a bot flag and talk to the users you mentioned. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 16:14 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs! I used your files as my bot test. The files are now in Rummad:Files uploaded by User:Huñvreüs. Since your files are screenshots of wikipedia it is probably better to use Patrom:Wikipedia-screenshot instead of cc-by-sa-4.0. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 17:27 (UTC)[respont]
All right, I agree. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 18:32 (UTC)[respont]
Hi, I've been asked to check the status of images I uploaded long ago as I'm not active anymore. Is there a simple way to find them and mark them ? Thanks. Fulup (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 08:06 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 I don’t seem to be able to run pwb login with this account. It works with my bot account, Strebot (kd) (which I have never actually used so far). But I will need sysop permissions to delete files. The only message I get is: ERROR: Login failed (Aborted). Could this be because two-factor authentication is enabled? Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 19:18 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs Yes. I have the same problem. I use two-factor authentication on my main account. I do not use it on my bot so I do not know if it would work if my bot got sysop permission. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 18 Mae 2024 da 19:27 (UTC)[respont]
Hello, I agree to license my files under the CC by-sa 4.0, thanks. Kadbzh Dakbzh (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 09:06 (UTC)[respont]
Thank you Dakbzh! Is it possible also to log in from Kadbzh and confirm that you are the photographer of all the uploads (unless otherwise noted) and that you are the same as Dakbzh? --MGA73 (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 11:23 (UTC)[respont]
Hello, I agree to license my files under the CC by-sa 4.0, thanks. Yes, I am the same. Kadbzh (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 11:24 (UTC)[respont]
Hello Dakbzh / Kadbzh that is good. I will wait untill I get a bot flag before I work on your files. Are you the photographer of all files? If not you have to check the category after I added the user category.
Huñvreüs I added source, author and license to your files. I also moved 1 file to Commons. You can see the result on Commons. I think we should wait with moving and deleting the files untill the bot flag is granted. If deleted only sysops can see the edits. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 14:05 (UTC)[respont]
Yes, I am.Dakbzh (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 15:26 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 The same user also uploaded files under this account, so they can be marked and kept in the same way.
And yes, waiting until you get the bot flag to transfer files to Commons looks reasonable to me. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 20:24 (UTC)[respont]
Hello @MGA73,
I agree to license my files under the CC by-sa 4.0.
MP (kaozeal) 19 Mae 2024 da 14:07 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 I found out that I can connect Pywikibot to my account using a bot password, so I will use that to delete the unused files. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 30 Mae 2024 da 18:52 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs will you delete all unused files or should we try to save those where uploaded provide a license? --MGA73 (kaozeal) 30 Mae 2024 da 19:01 (UTC)[respont]
There is hardly any file at all with a license (and for files that have licenses, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are valid…). I’ll keep the files uploaded by Kadbzh for now since a few of them are apparently own works (photos). Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 30 Mae 2024 da 19:12 (UTC)[respont]

Huñvreüs Can I take it that Wikipedia:Bot#MGA73bot means the bot is approved? --MGA73 (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 18:28 (UTC)[respont]

Yes, I closed the discussion Graet Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:05 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs Thank you. If you want you can now move your files to Commons and delete those with a NowCommons. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:20 (UTC)[respont]
Isn’t there an automated tool for this? Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:22 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs. You can use FileImporter. Just click the tab "Export to Wikimedia Commons" and if it looks good click "Import" and file will be moved (and if an admin does it the local file will be deleted). After the import perhaps add some categories. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:25 (UTC)[respont]
I see, but does this have to be done individually for each and every file? Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:27 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs Yes. Because a human have to check that the file is good before it is moved. But test it and see how it works. It should only take a few seconds. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:29 (UTC)[respont]
No problem for my 14 files, but I was thinking of Dakbzh’s 2300+ files… Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:35 (UTC)[respont]

Huñvreüs Yeah I know. I moved thousands of files from viwiki and jawiki to commons. I made a list like this one. That way I could transfer very fast (when working on pc I can open in a new window).

For your files it would look like this:

  1. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ImportFile?clientUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fbr.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FRestr%3AWikidata_John_Browning.webm&importSource=FileExporter
  2. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ImportFile?clientUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fbr.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FRestr%3ATikedenn-liammo%25C3%25B9-dishe%25C3%25B1velout.png&importSource=FileExporter

Etc. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 27 Mae 2024 da 19:46 (UTC)[respont]

Huñvreüs it is more likely that files will ever be used on Commons or other Wikis if there is a good description of what is on the photo. Sadly Google Translate does not help much with Breton. I come from Denmark and not many speak Danish but at least Google Translate can help with Danish. So it would be good if someone added a short description in English before the file is transferred and/or a link to the article the file is or could be relevant for. I know it will take more time but files are not as valuable if noone knows what they show. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 28 Mae 2024 da 05:54 (UTC)[respont]
Breton is indeed not well supported by automatic translators. You could try generating descriptions with ChatGPT 4, it is the least bad for that task in my experience. Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 28 Mae 2024 da 10:01 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs first step is to work on all files by Kadbzh to add information template and license and caegory Rummad:Files uploaded by User:Kadbzh. Then I would like Kadbzh to look/scan all the files in the category to check if there are any files that is not own work. If there are they should be moved to Rummad:Files uploaded by User:Kadbzh - not own work (or another suitable name). It should be easy to change category with HotCat for example. Once all files are fixed an Kadbzh say okay then we can worry about moving files to Commons. Or deleting files if there are any bad files. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 28 Mae 2024 da 14:07 (UTC)[respont]
Kadbzh (kd) and Huñvreüs (kd): I made the first bot edit on Restr:100px-Amelia-Stemma.png. Could you check to see if there are anything that should be written differently?
The template Patrom:Own is needed for when/if the file is transferred to Commons. The template should just have a text saying something like "Own work".
As author I have written "User:Kadbzh". It could also be "Kadbzh" or "User:Kadbzh aka "User:Dakbzh".
I can also change the edit summary if needed. --MGA73 (kaozeal) 28 Mae 2024 da 14:36 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 Can you please make the same kind of edit, but to a file that is used in a page? I might really get around to mass-deleting the unused files one of these days 😏
@Dakbzh N’ouzon ket ha gouzout a rez saozneg. C’hoant az peus bezañ meneget evel Kadbzh, Dakbzh, pe an daou, pa vo kaset ar skeudennoù da gCommons? Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 28 Mae 2024 da 15:53 (UTC)[respont]
Huñvreüs (kd) I will do those edits on all uploads by Kadbzh once my bot get a bot flag :-) --MGA73 (kaozeal) 28 Mae 2024 da 16:05 (UTC)[respont]
@MGA73 There is actually a Pywikibot script to transfer files to Commons. Could be useful… Huñvreüs (kaozeal) 30 Mae 2024 da 19:36 (UTC)[respont]
