Deskrivadur
English: In October 1888, Gauguin arrived in Arles in southern France, where Vincent van Gogh was already staying. Throughout the autumn, the two artists lived and worked together. Tension arose and grew between them, leading to the dramatic crisis when van Gogh cut off part of his ear after a vicious quarrel. In his landscapes from Arles, such as this one, Gauguin depicts nature as decorative fields of colour without any illusion of depth. Some sections are enigmatic – note, for instance, the shadow cast by the dog in the corner!
