English: The portrait, based on the death mask of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, was commissioned by Pietro Aretino to Titian, but it wasn't painted. The commission then passed to the painter Gian Paolo Pace, said "l'Olmo", who painted the portrait between October and November 1545. Then Pietro Aretino donated it to the Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici, Giovanni's son.
The painting is remembered in Florence for the first time in 1559: in the Ricordanze by Giorgio Vasari, the artist remembers having copied it as fresco in the "Sala di Giovanni dalle Bande Nere" in Palazzo Vecchio (painted between 1556 and 1559). In 1560 is described for the first time in the inventory of the "Guardaroba" of the Medicis, where it is attributed to Titian. The attribution persisted in all the inventories and subsequent studies, until 1905, with the studies of Georg Gronau before and then of Ettore Camesasca, who put together Pace's activities. The painting was used for many copies: among many others, in addition to those already mentioned by Vasari in the Palazzo Vecchio, you can remember the double portrait with his wife Maria Salviati (copy after Giovanni Battista Naldini, with variation on Giovanni's figure, inv. 1890 No. 5534), a copy of the seventeenth century (inv., 1890, No. 5360). Cat. No. 00129465Italiano: Il ritratto, basato sulla maschera mortuaria di Giovanni dalle Bande Nere, fu commissionato da Pietro Aretino a Tiziano Vecellio, ma senza che poi venisse realizzato. La commissione passò quindi al pittore Gian Paolo Pace, detto l'Olmo, che realizzò il dipinto tra l'ottobre e il novembre del 1545. In seguito Pietro Aretino donò il dipinto al duca Cosimo I de' Medici, figlio di Giovanni.
Il dipinto è ricordato a Firenze per la volta nel 1559, nelle Ricordanze di Giorgio Vasari, in cui l'artista ricorda di averlo copiato ad affresco nella "Sala di Giovanni delle Bande Nere" a Palazzo Vecchio (realizzata tra il 1556 e il 1559). Nel 1560 viene descritto per la prima volta nell'inventario della “Guardaroba" medicea, dove viene attribuito a Tiziano. L'attribuzione persistette in tutti gli inventari e gli studi successivi, fino al 1905, con gli studi prima di Georg Gronau e poi di Ettore Camesasca, che ricostruì l'attività di Pace. Il dipinto fu utilizzato per molte copie: tra le tante, oltre a quella già citata di Vasari in Palazzo Vecchio, si possono ricordare il doppio ritratto con la moglie Maria Salviati (copia da Giovanni Battista Naldini, con variante sulla figura di Giovanni, inv. 1890, n° 5534), una copia secentesca (inv. 1890, n° 5360).
